Name: Shatterstar (Gaveedra Seven) Door: Left Canon: Marvel Comics Canon Point: After the hunt for Kid Cable post X-Factor Volume 5. Age: Arbitrarily putting him directly on 30 because wtf knows Appearance: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ History: ☆ CR AU (Optional): NA Personality: Honorable: Given that Shatterstar has lived that gladiator life, that warrior’s life, he has a keen sense of honor which is a very broad umbrella of uprightness and specific morals that he adheres to in spite of being a battle hungry maniac. For starters he is loyal, though in certain circumstances it’s somewhat convoluted. For example, his relationship with Julio, especially in X-Factor, he is loyal to their relationship and his emotional attachment to him, but he is not above kissing or expressing physical affection towards just about anything that moves. Physical affection is separate from emotional connection to him and in his mind, he considers himself loyal in this regard. He is also loyal to those he considers friends, teammates, or those under his stewardship. In X-Force when the Thing attacks Guido, Shatterstar is quick to jump to his rescue, not out of any particular desire to fight (despite his love for battle), but due to the simple fact that the Thing screwed with his teammate, and it was justification enough for him to step in and run interference. Also, in the Shatterstar specific comics (a miniseries that has some problematic errors in continuity we’d like to forget) Shatterstar is a landlord of Manor Crossing, a refuge for displaced interdimensional beings like himself. Taking care of his tenants is his responsibility. So, when his tenants are kidnapped by someone from his past, he follows the kidnapper to the Mojoverse, even at the risk of becoming the Grandmaster’s gladiatorial puppet for eternity to save his tenants. Shatterstar also fights with a code of honor, in spite of being violent and battle hungry he believes in a good fight (not necessarily a clean or fair fight), a good death, and close combat. He disapproves of guns and goes so far as to berate (though probably not intentionally) Julio for using guns although Julio himself had lost his powers. He believes guns are not fit for a warrior and close combat is more honorable. He also believes in reciprocity, if you’ve done him a kindness or a favor, he will visit the same in return. Likewise, if one's done him a disservice or wronged him, he will also return the favor. Honesty is also one of his honorable traits, because he was raised in the Mojoverse and struggles with certain nuances he will be honest about things such as not getting certain idioms, jokes, or references. He’ll also be honest when there’s certain emotional nuances that perplex him because he was designed for battle and entertainment, not for love and physical pleasure. He openly tells Julio that he needs him to tell him how to feel or how he should feel, to anchor him when emotions overwhelm him. Shatterstar is very prone to honesty and not well versed in the art of lying (though he can keep a secret). He's also honor-bound to fight if someone challenges him, a specific example of this being when the Thing challenging him to fight and Shatterstar wanting to stand his ground and not refuse because he was challenged. He had to be ordered to stand down. Violent: Raised as a slave to fight in gladiator type battles for entertainment, violence, aggression, and a lust for fighting is coded into his personality. It's catnip for him, and much like the pull of the void he is drawn to fighting. It is such an ingrained part of how he operates that when he is in fight mode he can and will hit below the belt. He will goad and prod at sore spots if it means getting someone to fight him some more. It takes individuals with influence over him or someone he respects enough to listen to in order to drag him away (Rictor or Maddox). One example of this was in the X-Force when fighting the Thing he analyzed his fighting skills, mocked them for being basic, slapped him around a bit, and when he was down, he mocked the Thing’s relationship status to goad him into fighting again. He knew exactly where to sting to get the reaction he wanted. The same with Rahne when she attacked Shatterstar in a fit of jealousy of him sleeping with Julio. She believed Julio was being mind-controlled by Shatterstar and attacked him. While Shatterstar was pulling his punches with her (because she was pregnant at the time with a child everyone believed was Julio’s), he even attempted to talk her down by telling her it wasn’t what it looked like. Her threatening him led him to rankle her with “Okay, it was what you thought. Happy? I know I was.” He taunted her while smiling the whole time knowing it was just the thing to say to get her to lash out. His violence is not directionless; however, he doesn’t fight just for the sake of it there has to be a clear and present reason for it. He doesn’t go around picking battles or fighting with civilians. There’s no honor in fighting people who can’t fight him back, there’s no glory or fun to be had in these instances. Yes, a battle must be enjoyable for him, the violence is a sport that he enjoys because he is good at it. Being good at something renders fun and enjoyment and he was raised in the Mojoverse to revel in the violence, to enjoy the fight, to make it a spectator’s event. He often fights with the exaggeration of someone who is being observed by a crowd. His years of training and experience have lent him the ability to analyze and break down the fighting patterns of others to use against them and it also makes him a good strategist. His violent nature and love for battle have disadvantages, aside from the obvious holes in his personality (the goading, the almost cruel way he’ll attack people emotionally to rile them up) it has also impacted his relationships. In his comic of the same name, Shatterstar and Julio broke up because they didn’t fight enough (this is obviously a flawed part of his continuity, but it’s easy to see how his battle lust could interfere in his relationship dynamics). His violent tendencies also make him a little hot-headed and he will hold his ground in battle even when the odds are astronomically against him. Such as in Knights of X when he and Mordred are overwhelmed with enemies. He wants to stay in the battlefield to commit atrocities even against common sense because it’s fun. Julio has to drag him out of his battle-brained, violent-lust state of mind to save his life. Inapposite: A fatal flaw in his character is not always within his control as Shatterstar is on a learning curve when it comes to interacting with people outside of staged combat. As a slave made to do battle in an arena for much of his life, certain interactions tend to be above his paygrade and to this end he can be wildly inappropriate and might not fully grasp boundaries. He is prone to passionately kissing others in greeting without warning and tends to flirt with anyone who moves. It’s an ongoing gag in the X-Factor that Shatterstar is often pulled away from introductions because it is perceived as flirting. This confuses Shatterstar and he tells Julio specifically that his jealousy is unbecoming, so Julio allows him to go through an introduction unimpeded and it ended in a kiss. So, it’s not without justification. It's even more problematic that he engages in such behavior while in a relationship. He sees very little wrong with casual hookups if he’s not emotionally connected to these individuals. It’s about the experience of pleasure in a variety of ways while the person he’s in an actual relationship fulfills the emotional and physical parts as well. He doesn’t see this as a problem even if his partner does and it requires navigating on his part. What makes this even more convoluted is that Shatterstar has demonstrated jealousy when it comes to emotional attachments. Physical pleasure is one thing, but if his partner shows emotional attachment, it complicates the situation. Watching Julio dance with someone else in the earlier X-Force comics left him feeling conflicted, he didn’t act on it, but it was visible (granted in the 90’s there was a lot of subtext). Maddox also talks about how Julio’s hypothetical relationship with Quicksilver as a joke was a good thing because he wouldn’t want to make Shatterstar jealous. He also has difficulty piecing together certain interactions when they fly in the face of what he expects. For example, his battle with the Thing after Guido is attacked leaves Guido feeling a little on the salty side. Not only does Shatterstar step in to take over the battle with all good intentions, but Shatterstar usurps his position as the “strong man,” Shatterstar has the skills to pay the bills. Shatterstar can’t figure out why this is a problem and how his concern in this case is a slap to Guido’s pride even though in Shatterstar’s mind he was standing up for his teammate. It’s not a bad trait on his part, per se, but it shows that Shatterstar lacks the ability to read emotional nuance within people and sometimes requires guidance. Blunt: The opposing side of honesty is bluntness, on the one hand he’s straightforward, but on the other hand he can come off as tactless and uncaring. This is also the result of having been brought up in the Mojoverse and therefore has never really needed a filter for his thoughts when outwardly expressing them. He’s not always on point when it comes to certain situations that require a high degree of emotional intelligence. Usually, these situations pop up in emotionally charged conversations such as one conversation he had with Julio concerning Julio’s jealousy. Not only does he call his partner out on it he breaks down Julio’s insecurities in a way that is very calculated and accurate, but unintentionally cruel. It’s cruel in that he brings up Julio’s past familial and romantic relationships and while they might be the source of his insecurities the problem was between the two of them. Another instance was when he was at the gun range with Julio, and he told Julio that guns were not a weapon for warriors. Julio, having lost his powers, had very little means to protect himself, but Shatterstar overlooked this and instead of reading the room he pretty much shit on Julio by calling him dishonorable. Not only did he fail to see that this was Julio’s means of defense he also couldn’t pick up on the emotional cue that his disparagement, however forward, was hurtful. Powers and Abilities: Powers ☆ Superhuman everything: speed, strength, agility (man can dodge a barrage of bullets at point blank range), dexterity, senses, balances, coordination, endurance, and durability. ☆ Mojo weirdness like hollow bones making him lighter which supplements his agility and athletic ability (part bird? He’s a mutant, IDEK). ☆ Healing factor. The man literally fell onto a sword, stabbed himself through the chest so he could pull an opponent down with him and subsequently stab them through the chest. He knew where to stab himself and he was able to pull the sword out and regenerate. His regeneration usually takes hours, so it was probably his berserker like endurance that kept him going. ☆ Enhanced learning capabilities have enabled him to grasp on to technology, language, and weaponry with relative ease. He learned how to drive a car as he was driving a car, understood the concept of breaks but was like fuck that, stopping is pointless. He also learned Spanish from television, the second love of his life. He’s less good at picking up social nuances and emotional cues. ☆ Shockwave generation, he’s able to create shockwaves through his “force of will” but it’s not an ability he uses very often because it’s exhausting. ☆ He’s also capable of empathic-driven teleportation meaning he can teleport to anywhere another person can visualize whether it’s across the country or across the universe. There, are a few stipulations to this, he can only do thing with someone he has a connection with, an anchor (friendly or otherwise, hence the empathic), he cannot do it consecutively and requires an extended break (at the risk of killing everyone involved including himself), and the place that is visualized ought to be outside (if the visualized place is indoors he runs the risk of tearing the whole place down because he creates a shockwave doing this) Abilities ☆ Due to having grown up in the Mojoverse as a fighter/slave/gladiator/entertainer, he has a excellent nose for strategy especially where fighting is concerned. He’s good at it, he’s been doing it for a while. He is able to pick up on the fighting patterns of others and break them down so he can pick apart their weaknesses. ☆ He does the kicking and the punching and the martial arts thing very well. ☆ Star is capable of adapting to his surroundings and picking up skills, learning from others very well. Driving a car on the fly? ☆ He can speak at least three different languages (English, Spanish, and German) plus whatever mumbo jumbo they speak in the Mojoverse. Nerfs ☆ I would say the only real game-breaking ability he possesses is teleporting. We can either nix this ability entirely or limit it to the world of Duplicity and only his anchors can only be whatever dom or subs he’s connected to at the time. Either works given that it is already an ability with some pretty severe limitations. Inventory: ☆ His swords ☆ Three throwing knives |
